How to Tie and Stake Tomato vines

Trellising:
Tomatoes tie-up should be done in a timely manner. Trellising is generally carried out after the seedlings are about 30cm high when intertillage and weeding are finished. The trellis should be inserted 7 - 10cm away from the plant, avoiding damaging the root system.

There are propeller-shaped frame, fence frame and "cross" frame.

1. Propeller-shaped frame.
In the vicinity of the plant, a bamboo pole is inserted obliquely from inside to outside so that the top ends of the two opposite bamboo poles cross into a propeller shape, and then connect them with a horizontal bamboo pole at the intersection. The height of the bracket is 170-200cm. Both ends of the field land can also be reinforced with bamboo poles inserted obliquely. This kind of bracket is stable but has poor ventilation and light transmission.

2. Fence frame.
Bamboo poles are crossed and obliquely inserted on the inner or outer side of plants with the distance between the two bamboo poles about 40 centimeters, and then set up the horizontal bamboo poles above, forming a net-shaped fence. The plant and its ear are fixed on the fence frame. This kind of support has good ventilation and light transmission, but it has a large wind-blocking surface so that it is easy to cause lodging of plants over the land in case of strong wind.

3. A cross-shaped frame.
With a length of 1.7 - 2.0 meters, relatively sturdy hedge bamboo, insert an upright bamboo every 1 meter or so along the tomato planting line, and then a transverse bamboo about 30 - 40 cm height can be erected every 30 - 40 cm from the ground, a total of 5 - 6 layers. This kind of bracket has better ventilation and light transmission, but it is not stable enough. To solve this problem, tie the intersections firmly with straw, hemp rope or plastic tape.

Tying the vine:
Tie the vine is to tie the tomato stem to the bracket. When tying tendrils, the fruit ear can also be hung from the bamboo pole to prevent the stem from being broken due to the excessive weight of the ear. Tying shall be carried out several times. For every 20-30cm of plant height, tying once for 4-5 times. Where there is an ear at the stem, it should be tied to the lower part of the ear. Tie the vine and hang the ear should be carried on at the same time.

Tying tools include straw, hemp rope, rags, plastic rope, bandage, etc. The tying method is to tie the required fixing points of the tying tools on the tomato stem with the bamboo pole to form an "8" knot. Tying should not be too tight or too loose. In order to prevent the fixed point from moving up and down, left and right too much, tying material can make one more circle at the fixed point of the bamboo pole. When tying the tendrils, do not tie the spikes between the stems and the poles, so as not to affect the development of the spikes.
